Mahón Gin

The English occupation of Menorca from 1713 to 1755 has left an eclectic legacy which includes the cultivation of apples, rearing of livestock, some rather nice Georgian style buildings and Mahón Gin – to my mind, the best of the aforementioned.

Originally produced for the British fleet (where British fleet moors civilisation in the form of a gin bottle follows), Mahón Gin is brewed from juniper berries in traditional, wood-fired copper stills at the island’s only remaining distillery in Mahón – the Xoriguer (pronounced sho-ri-gair) distillery.

An aromatic blend, it is traditionally served with lemonade, a drink which is known as pomada, or in generous measures topped with bitter lemon.
