Both excellent ones. It’s like playing Russian roulette with showers that suffer from a knob overdose (maybe not the best word to use in this context).

My two…
1) The shiny chrome ‘designer’ shower controls that are way too cool to have any cluttering text or symbols. So what does this one do? Spray water from the rainforest above or squirt it from the hand-held spray at the side, or fill the bath? And is it the spray director? Might it be the temp control? And if it is the temp control, which way is hot? In the end it doesn’t matter because you are always going to get sprayed by cold water from an unexpected direction!

2) Small print toiletries. You know the ones you take into the shower, only to have to get out again so you can put on your glasses to check whether you have the conditioner, shampoo, body wash, hand wash or bubble bath! I’ve only ever encountered one hotel – the Melia, Berlin – that had toiletries with large black print.

The place was Velika Planina. Here’s a link to the piece I wrote about. Apologies for getting carried away in the descriptions, it did blow my mind 🙂

There’s no doubt there was a hefty dose of pretentiousness involved. But the main problem I have with the writer is they position themselves as being someone who writes about food, so I expect them to walk into an establishment like that armed with certain knowledge. This would include knowing tasting menus in a Michelin star restaurant don’t have a main course; the very fact that it is a Michelin star means there’s likely to be a certain amount of theatre (some may call it pretentiousness) involved; if you want the chef to mess around with the menu, you have to let them know in advance. Sure, they got a lot of views, comments, and support. But for me the writer lost credibility when it comes to writing about food, and they and their friends came across as being quite unpleasant and rude. Maybe the chef was as well, but two wrongs and all that.

I just read your article about Lake Bled in Slovenia. At the end you teased about another wonderful place in Slovenia, and since I am planning a trip there in a few months, I’m really curious to know about other great places there. Can you share please?
Many thanks,
Wendy

Even unfair criticism has a grain of truth. The chef’s response to this article is, I think, evidence that he is incredibly pretentious and therefore lacks the ability to accept and improve from criticism. While I’ve never tried his food, I suspect any food cooked by such a person may in fact be just as bad as the article described. A chef who cared about his customers and really wanted them to enjoy his art would probably have started with an apology and request for suggestions to improve, not a picture of a horse.

They did note that there was no menu, only a scannable code for the meal leading to a video of the chef doing extreme sports. So if anything, they could probably be forgiven for not realizing that they would be served food that they would be allergic to, which would include a large portion of the tasting menu. Hell, they almost certainly didn’t know there would be no main course because there was no information available to judge what they would be eating. Also, if you dislike pretentiousness, what did you think of the chef’s reply?

Comment on Walking in Peneda-Gerês National Park by Jack https://buzztrips.co.uk/posts/walking-in-peneda-geres-national-park/#comment-480133 Wed, 31 Aug 2022 10:57:26 +0000 https://buzztrips.co.uk/?p=18677#comment-480133 In reply to Stephan Olesen.

I’m not surprised Stephan, we found information about hiking routes in the park sketchy at best. The routes we walked and put together across the park were specifically for the UK Slow Travel company Inntravel, so I can’t share those. What I would advise is a visit to the park information centre at Porta do Mezio. They have a number of leaflets with routes. They’re not perfect, but they are decent enough and only cost a few Euros.
